The acute timeline, phase by phase
A single large "flood" dose follows a fairly consistent arc, though timing varies by person and dose:- Onset (0 to 1 hour): a body-wide buzzing or humming, often with nausea and difficulty with balance and coordination (ataxia). Most clinics keep you lying down from this point.
- Visionary phase (about 1 to 8 hours): the "waking dream" many describe as an autobiographical replay rather than a euphoric high. Eyes are usually closed. It is not typically pleasurable, and that is expected.
- Introspective phase (about 8 to 24 hours): the vivid imagery fades into a slower, analytical state with a strong stimulant-like inability to sleep.
- The "gray day" (roughly day 2 to 3): a flat, depleted, physically exhausted period as the body recovers. Ataxia and fatigue can persist.
Why it keeps working after the visions stop
Ibogaine itself is metabolized by the liver (via the CYP2D6 enzyme) into noribogaine, which is not psychoactive but has a long half-life measured in days.[1] Noribogaine is what people are describing when they report an "afterglow" or a reduced-craving window in the weeks after a session. This lingering metabolite is the mechanistic basis for using ibogaine as an addiction "interruption," and it is also why the drug's cardiac effects are not over when the visions end.How long the cardiac risk lasts
This is the part clinics that rush discharge get wrong. Because ibogaine and noribogaine prolong the QT interval, the window for a dangerous heart rhythm extends well past the visionary phase.[2] The 2016 clinical guidelines the field uses call for continuous cardiac monitoring during dosing and supervision that continues until the ECG returns to baseline, which can be many hours to more than a day. A program that sends you back to a hotel the morning after dosing is not following that standard. What this means for you
- Plan for a program of several days minimum, not an overnight. The acute effects alone run more than a day, and safe monitoring runs longer.
- Do not expect to travel, drive or make decisions for at least a few days after dosing. Ataxia and exhaustion are normal and real.
- Ask the clinic exactly how long it monitors your heart after dosing, and how it decides you are cleared. "Until your ECG normalizes" is the answer you want.
